Learning How To SEE Beyond The Viewfinder

Everything you have read, have been taught, and have learned about photography doesn't matter, just not in the ways you thought your expensive equipment made you believe. Ok, dont throw out your books just yet because everything you have learned does, in fact, matter. Learning how to SEE is just as important to your heart than it is to your mind, as any true artist would tell you.

Expect the unexpected and you will know how to SEE. Life happens in a neverending story and whether you are capturing video, motion pictures, or still images, anyone holding a camera becomes the storyteller and we wouldn't have it any other way. The difference being, some tell stories about their kids playing soccer while others tell a story that inspires everyone to be a great at what they do, even the dads who are proud parents of young soccer players.

Watching an interview program known around the world at The David Letterman Show, U2 bandmates Bono & The Edge were speaking on behalf of their numerous charities around the world when Bono revealed he was taken aback by the unexpectedly premature death of his friend and former singer from the band INXS, by the name of Michael Hutchence, effecting him to this day, some fourteen years later. For the first time, Bono & The Edge performed an acoustic version of a song they had written in memory of the unfortunate passing of Mr. Hutchence directly from the seating next to Dave's desk. "Stuck In A Moment" is about the feeling of getting into certain moments in life that we dont think will end and subsequently we feel trapped and blinded by the moment. For example, your son or daughter is graduating from school and you dont want to miss a thing so you buy the biggest camera your budget can afford. The ceremonies happen and you feel you are suddenly Steven Spielberg because Mr. Spielberg makes it look so easy! But you forget one basic fact, you are shooting snapshots and you didnt take the time to know the story you are going to tell. This happens frequently in life and the story captures the essence of getting caught up in the days of our lives and we get stuck.

THE PLAN:

Just as in the U2 song, Stuck In A Moment, Michael Hutchence was caught up in a moment in his life and he lost control of things and felt trapped. What was missing was a defined plan. We plan our vacations, we plan our lunch for the day, but we always seem to forget about making a plan for what we want to capture today with our camera. If we are shooting home movies (pictures) of a graduation ceremony we will probably focus on the group pictures at the end. However, if we plan accordingly, we could capture priceless moments during the ceremony which paints a more colorful picture of everyone involved in bringing the subject to achieve the rewards of the ceremony.

It is about being in our own moments and capturing time as it unfolds to us, a 'vision' some would call it. This is perhaps what photography is about, capturing moments to remind us of achievements, failures, and everything in between which is what living is about. There is no size limitation, big or small, for capturing great moments, just a vision to capture and behold a moment. Great images begin in the space of the mind & heart and this is why some are great and others are simply designs on a piece of paper, soaked in photo-chemicals.

As Bono was singing in his song, "And if the night runs over, and if the day won't last. And if your way should falter, along this stony pass, It's just a moment, This time will pass." When you learn to stop and breathe-in everything around, you have done your homework learning how to use your camera, then it is time to simply release the shutter and behold life. "Now you're stuck in a moment, and you can't get out of it". If you know what to expect then life brings you surprises that you already had a feeling about and you will never be stuck again.
